Membership Issues

One thing that Brian alone offered was a database system, similar
to what his state's community-technical colleges use to help faculty
members locate those with the expertise they need. We need some
way like that to enroll members, then to decide the minimum necessary
information we need from members, such as name, institution, country,
up to 2 e-mail addresses, up to 2 Websites, and what charter members
would offer in the way of skills or committee participation in lieu of
dues. At first there will be so much to do that those interested could
freely become charter members, provided they join committees, while
those in non-Western countries, or for reasons approved by the
Membership Committee, could have their dues waived in the future
as well. Yes, we would like to have individual and institutional
memberships. I think the advantage of forming committees at an
early stage is to get people working on relevant issues without
flooding everyone's mailboxes, since much discussion will be needed
on each committee area.

One Membership Committee may suffice if it works with Finance,
Affiliate Liaison, and other relevant committees. We have not had any
offers for Treasurer functions, such as the way the TCC conference
collected fees electronically. If we widen the circle a little maybe we
can gather more technical as well as organizational expertise. As we
discuss mainly organizational issues, I hope, on keyone-l, please
consider to what kind of committee you could contribute the most,
in addition to subject area committees that could each be named:
You_Name_It Online Education Committee. Other Committees without
"Online Education" in their titles would be organizational. The Affiliate
Liaison Committee, for example, would develop knowledge about, and
links with, other organizations in consultation with other relevant
committees and the Executive Board of elected officers and Committee
chairpersons. If this seems like jumping ahead, see my next posts.
