ONLINE ASSESSMENT FOR PLACEMENT, SKILL CERTIFICATION AND BEYOND

INTRODUCTION

In our information technology department, grades were our only measure of student learning and course success. We wanted more complete qualitative and quantitative measures of how our students and courses were doing.

For Spring 2002, we proposed a 50-student pilot project that implemented two student self-assessments and online skills testing.

The student self-assessments provide individual, subjective measures of skills improvement over the semester. The online Brainbench certifications provide objective skills testing.

The Brainbench results are reported individually and a powerful reporting function allows us to look at the student results in aggregate. In addition to collecting student assessments, we surveyed students about their responses to online testing.
